The 'Owl Guardian' art piece is a meticulously crafted mural. This artwork honors the Owl, a significant figure in the lore of the Dakelh people and my Father clan symbol, and incorporates other culturally significant elements such as the Frog, Salmon, and the sunburst, all set against the sweeping mountains and the lake called the Keyah.
In Dakelh culture, the Owl is revered as a guardian and messenger. It is believed to possess wisdom and insight, often serving as a spiritual guide for those who seek its protection. Owls are thought to bridge the physical and spiritual worlds, carrying messages from ancestors and offering guidance during times of need.
The Frog symbolizes transformation and renewal, reflecting the cyclical nature of life. It is my Mother clan. The Salmon represents perseverance, abundance, and the sustenance of life, essential to the Dakelh people's way of living and their connection to the land and waters.
The 'Owl Guardian' mural intricately depicts the Owl in a pose that conveys its vigilant nature. The Frog and Salmon are included in the artwork, symbolizing the interconnectedness of life and the natural world. Behind the Owl, a vibrant sunburst radiates, signifying hope, enlightenment, and the dawn of new beginnings. The backdrop features the majestic mountains and the serene lake called the Keyah, capturing the essence of the Nadleh Whut'en traditional hunting grounds.
The Keyah, sometimes called Keyoh, by the lake. A traditional hunting ground of my Ancestors. The 'Owl Guardian' stands as a sentinel, watching over the land and waters. Deeply rooted in cultural heritage, making the artwork a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of land, culture, and community.
It is a cultural touchstone, a piece of environmental art, and a tool for education. It aims to inspire respect for the land, educate visitors about the rich traditions of the Dakelh people, and foster a deeper appreciation for the natural and spiritual world.
I hope to continue the tradition of storytelling and cultural preservation, connecting the past with the present, and inspiring future generations to honor and protect our heritage through art, film, and music.
